The ramping up of the national minimum wage since 2015 has more than halved the share of low-paid employees in Britain. But it is far from job done: too few low-paying jobs offer dignity, respect and security to the people doing them. This article reports on how the minimum wage has transformed pay - and how we can go beyond this to make real progress on providing 'good work'.

This article provides a comparison of the British Modern Apprenticeship scheme with apprenticeship provision in six continental countries. A number of key aspects of apprenticeship provision were examined in order to establish a benchmark against which to judge British policy for vocational training. These aspects include: length of training; content of programmes; methods of assessment; final standards required; how apprentice places are provided; how candidates find these places; the educational background of apprentices; the incentives to enter and stay the course; completion and success rates; subsequent employment records; how the various national schemes are managed and financed.

This research reveals that women face a greater risk of unemployment than men and lose a larger share of their earnings. More of this gender gap is due to the unequal division of childcare responsibilities than to differences in education or seniority at work.
